London art gallery housing the British
national collection of pictures by artists no
longer living. It was founded in 1824.
Parliament voted 57,000 for the purchase of
38 pictures from the collection of John
Julius, plus 3,000 for the maintenance of the
building in Pall Mall, London, where they
were housed. The present building in
Trafalgar Square was designed by William
Wilkins (1778-1839) and opened in 1838: there
have been several extensions.
